Magistrate Cara Sweet

Magistrate Cara Sweet will address the recent changes to C.R.S 14-10-124 in regards to domestic violence definitions and requirements upon the court when any allegation of domestic violence being made by a parent, professional (CFI/CLR/PRE), a therapist or an advocate, and the impact allegations can have on parenting time orders, motions to modify parenting time, motions to restrict.  She will address the ripple effect that these statutory changes have therapeutic providers who work in this space and the children who are most impacted.  Magistrate Sweet will also touch on recent case law issued by the Supreme Court in In re Marriage of Dale, that also has a significant impact on all professionals who work with and help families where abuse or endangerment is claimed.  Attendees of the training will gain insight into how the law works in practicality, what has changed regarding both the protections of children in domestic violence households and the on-going limitations of the statute, and what therapeutic providers may hear from parents and children as to what is needed from them, or what judges are doing (or not doing) in response to allegations of domestic violence.
