3-GEN MEDIATION: Children, Parents, and Grandparents
In 1998, the Colorado Legislature passed the Parental Responsibilities Act, which requires divorcing parents or the court to create a Parenting Plan for their children. In the intervening years, however, significant changes have occurred which drastically increase the importance of understanding the pressures confronting the contemporary divorcing family. 3-GEN MEDIATION brings three generations together to discuss and agree on their roles and responsibilities. It includes the voices of the children, the obligations of the divorcing parents, and the commitments of the grandparents. Separate from a Parenting Plan, the parties attempt to reach a Family Agreement that outlines their understanding.
Presenter: Joan McWilliams, JD, MSJA, is an award-winning lawyer/mediator, author, and coach. She has worked with over 3,000 divorcing couples and recognizes the family and societal issues that children face. When COVID hit, she pivoted her mediation practice and now focuses solely on grandparents and their power to support and inspire grandkids. Her book, Grandfluence™: How Grandparents Can Change the World will be published in 2026.
